 New Version of FARTSSIE [Power / Sample Size]

Dear all,

David Dubins has just published version of 1.4 his freeware Excel-spreadsheet.
FARTSSIE stands for 'Free Analysis Research Tool for Sample Size Iterative Estimation'.
You may download it from his site.

This is not a proper bug-report… :-D
What operating system are you using (including localization, patch-level), which version of M$-Excel, etc.

M$-Excel will come up with a safety warning first - you will have to click the middle button Enable Macros in order to use the macros within the workbook (the text of the button depends on the language-setting of Windows).

After activating macros, the numbers do not change automatically - you will have to click the respective button (Calculate Sample Size in your example).

Although David is a member of the forum, you may send him an e-mail as well (you will find his address in the [Intro]-sheet of FARTSSIE.xls.

Hi everyone,

My sample size program has undergone a few renovations. Version 1.6 is available for download here:

Please remember to enable macros, otherwise sample size estimation will not work.

The reason for the most recent version is an addition of a worksheet ("Scaled BE - HVD") which will calculate the scaled bioequivalence limits for each method detailed in the FDA proposal for Highly Variable Drugs, outlined here:

If method C2 is to go forward, essentially highly variable drugs will get a big break. Provided the Test/Reference ratio is between 95-105%, there shouldn't be a need for more than 40 subjects to attain 80% power. In fact, as the intraCV of the reference increases, the number of subjects required actually decreases asymptotically to 33. The impact on the industry would be massive.

Here is a guide to what the BE limits would look like using method C2, scaled to the intraCV of the reference product:

           80% power (4th column)
SS(C2):    Sample size using the scaled BE limits in the third column, given a T/R ratio
           between 95-105% at 80% power (5th column)
