 Acrobat Reader DC annoyances [Tips / Tricks]

Dear all,

the latest version of Acrobat Reader in its default settings does not display “large” images in PDFs any more (grey boxes instead). THX, Ah-doo-bee! :angry:

To change:

Edit ► Preferences ► Category: Page Display

  • Page content and information
  •    Display large images

BTW, there is no setting to permanently switch off the annoying “Tools Pane” on the right-hand side. Either memorize the keyboard-shortcut

 ⇑ F4

to toggle it off/on or – if you have admin’s access rights and courageousness – in the the XML-file

\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat Reader DC\Reader\AcroApp\LOC\Viewer.aapp

delete the red lines

<Application xmlns="http://ns.adobe.com/acrobat/app/2014"
  title="Viewer" id="Viewer" majorVersion="1" requiresDoc="true" minorVersion="0">
  <Layouts>
    <Layout name="Default">
      <RHP>
        <Component name="AppShortcutListView" type="Custom"/>
      </RHP>
    </Layout>
  </Layouts>

</Application>

where LOC is your locale (ENU=English-US, DEU=German, FRA=French, ESP=Spanish, DAN=Danish, RUS=Russian, etc.).
Note that after you changed this file
  • the keyboard-shortcut will open an empty box… If you need tools, you have to specifically activate them from the Menu: Display ► Tools.
  • you have to restart your browser to apply the new setting for online-PDFs.

 Acrobat Reader DC annoyances

I bloody hate this new Reader DC thing.
Now my scrollbar to the right is gone. Pushing shift+F4 just toggles the navigation pane on and off, but the scroll bar remains utterly gone. Google does not help. I am getting insane.
I think since this is a Tips & Tricks thread my tip is to show Reader DC the finger and do everything in your power to roll back if that is possible at all...:not really:

Pass or fail!

If you just need a viewer, Firefox should do the trick. Acrobat X was the last version I bought and will be the last for ever, I guess...

That’s not a proper bug report. Cannot confirm it on my system.

 Installed Reader XI

Reader XI is just fine. Happy downloads are still available and that compatibility is maintained without auto-upgrades to that hideous DC thing.

Pass or fail!

 Acrobat Reader DC annoyances

Dear all,

last week (without changing anything on my system) DC Reader 2015.016.20041 started to display a black square when I selected the arrow to mark text. Looks like this:

[image]

Browsing Adobe’s forums it was clear that I’m not alone. The solution from Adobe’s support:
  1. Set Windows explorer to show hidden files.
  2. Navigate to local appdata folder, e.g.,
    C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Local\Adobe\Acrobat\DC
  3. Delete the file IconCacheRdr.dat
  4. Launch Reader.
Helped for my local PDFs but not for ones displayed in the browser. Hence:
  1. Purge your browser’s cache.
  2. Close and launch again.
