 Volume of fluid [Design Issues]

Dear all,

What is the reason behind giving 240 ml of water only, after administering the IP? How is this justified.

Thanks and Regards,

 Volume of fluid

Dear Phani!

❝ What is the reason behind giving 240 ml of water only, after administering the IP?

Convention - which differs between countries. See this thread and please search the forum in the future.

❝ How is this justified.

Was never justified, IMHO.
One urban myth is that the volume is related to 250 mL used in the BCS. But: the stomach is never ‘dry’ - contains about 500 mL liquid in the fasted state, and water has a very short half-life… Actually it should guarantee proper swallowing (with too little fluid the formulation may stick to the oesophagus).

Dear both,

❝ Was never justified, IMHO.

Remember this recommendation comes from the US. 240 ml = 8 US fluid ounces = 1/2 US pint. Just the regular size of a US glass of water, it seems.

Yes, right - but I would not call that the justification Phani asked for…
