 modified formulations [Regulatives / Guidelines]

Dear all,

Can you differentiate between Exteded Release (ER), Sustained Release (SR), Delayed Release (DR) formulations of Modified release (MR). How the PK characterstics modified release differ from Immediate Release formulations. Won't it not so that Drug in IR formulation following linear kinetics, will follow non-linear kinetics in MR form due release characterstics. Are there are any other differant MR forms

with

Dear drrammohanj,

you have asked series of questions, let me try to answer your first one.

As per my Understanding; sustained release (SR) and extended release (ER) are synonymous which differs from delayed release.

SR or ER formulation dissolve slowly and release a drug over time so that they can be taken less frequently than instant release and that they keep steadier level of drug in the bloodstream. While delayed release formulation delays the release of medication to prevent it from getting destroyed or inactivated in gastric juices.
