You are right. This is in line with the section 'Number of subjects, lines 222-224', where the detailed specifications in the current NfG (variance, α, T/R ratio, power) are replaced by a laconic 'The number of subjects to be included in the study should be based on an appropriate sample size calculation.' ;-)

It's funny to notice that the intention of writing a Cookbook sometimes leads to washed-out phrases (in general, under certain circumstances, preferably, adequate, appropriate,...).
