Hi again,

I am happy to hear that it is now working with glm.
Note that subject is "nested within sequence" - that is why you get slightly odd results (zero deviation ± convergence criterion) for your sequence effect after drop1. I think it goes like this*: First the model is fit with Subj, Treatm, Period and Sequence. Then, to find the SS for Sequence a model with Subj, Treatm and Period is fit. The difference in residuals is supposed to be the type III Sequence effect. However, because of the subject being nested in sequence thing, removal of the Sequence from the full model corresponds to removing nothing (i.e. Sequence is already there because of the inclusion of Subject). Thus, a compensation for this phenomenon is necessary. SAS apparent figgers it out automatically, while R doesn't.

I am not aware of any syntactical trick to make R compensate for the nesting. If others know it then it would be relevant to hear about it. Otherwise I guess there is room for improvement on the part of the R development team?

EM.

*: As usual I could be completely wrong.
