Sorry, I did not mean asymptotically (central limit theorem :blahblah:) but approximately (due to numeric issues). Theoretically the sum should be zero, of course.
IIRC, in old versions of lm() fitting data without errors (like your first example) threw an error and there was even a warning in the man-page.
