Hi all,

I received an invitation today which was really painfully dumb.

Here is a little exerpt of the email which was otherwise worded nicely:

"It is our great pleasure and privilege to welcome you to join the 8th World Gene Convention-2017, which will take place in Macao, China during November 13-15, 2017. We would like to welcome you to be the chair/speaker in Theme 801: Next Generation Sequencing while presenting about Reference Datasets for 2-Treatment, 2-Sequence, 2-Period Bioequivalence Studies

(...)

WGC-2017 features a very strong technical program, mainly focused on: breakthroughs in gene, advances genomics & genetics, new research of DNA and RNA (...)"

The conference is real, I believe.

You can imagine how they have been parsing abstracts from all sorts of journals and scanning for select terms that are common in the DNA world such as "sequence". There must be a ton of people receiving such rubbish.

I don't know if I should laugh or cry. This is an example of informatics gone totally wrong. Brave new world...:PCchaos:

Pass or fail!
