I'd prefer to compare the logarithmic likelihood to see which optimiser found the best peak, if they are not the same.
The 1:1 comparison here is Method C vs. bear using lme. The above AICs would give the impression that bear did not find the optimum well; possibly something to do with the model specification, but I hope to see the log likelihood and the df's.
From the posts above I'd say I am not completely sure the df's are equal all over the range, cf. the drug df's used for the t-statistics.
