If you have a suitable PD parameter (serving as a surrogate for the effect or adverse reactions) and you are able to establish a - preferably physiological - PK/PD link model, it will help a lot designing PK studies in early phases of drug development.
In the recent past Population PK/PD modeling has become a valuable tool.
