 HPLC UV vs Mass [Bioanalytics]

Greetings to all you out there in the forum,

I have another beginners question. Aproximately what percentage of studies can be done via HPLC UV, and what % has to be done via HPLC mass?

This is defininitely not a beginner's question ;-)

This mainly depends on your aims...
Since drugs are getting more and more specific for the disease(s), doses - and therefore concentrations in biological fluids - are getting lower throughout the last years. This trend will continue.
One should remember that you always should apply an analytical method which is sutable for the intended use and being as cost-effective as possible.
Therefore you should not only consider HPLV-UV vs. LC-MS/MS.
I would rank the methods like this:
HPLC-UV
HPLC-DAD (diode array detection)
HPLC-FL (native fluorescence < photodegradation < online derivatization < precolumn derivatization)
HPLC-ECD (electrochemical - mainly amperometric - detection)
LC-MS/MS

You see, there is something 'in between'.

We once performed a couple of BE-studies of nearly all mainly used antibiotics for a developing country; there was simply no need for any MS-analysis.

This answer may not be the one you expected, but it's actually impossible to come up with a definite number...
