 Earth-mover's distance [Nonparametrics]

Hi all,

re. FDA Ciclosporine draft guidance:

Does anyone know where I should start to get to grips with Earth-mover's distance for real and in practice?
Wikipedia, the reference indicated in the guidance and some random googling hasn't given me a solid basis for understanding anything, much less for doing anything of value with it.

Note that the footnote opens up the possibility of using some other statistical similarity measures, and I hope to go that way, but let us for the purpose of this thread discuss EMD only :-D:confused::pirate:

I could be wrong, but…

Best regards,
ElMaestro

No, I still don't believe much in the usefulness of IVIVCs for OIPs when it comes to picking candidate formulations for the next trial. This is not the same as saying I don't believe in IVIVCs.

 Earth-mover's distance

Hi ElMaestro,

» […] Earth-mover's distance …

OT: Wow, what a term! Reminds me on

Δῶς μοι πᾶ στῶ καὶ τὰν γᾶν κινάσω.
Give me the place to stand, and I shall move the earth.

 Earth-mover's distance

Hi Hötzi,

» Bonus question: Who the heck is Stolfi?

What????
I don't think I know anyone with that name or with that handle. Sounds like a German side dish.
"Einmal Currywurst mit Stolfi und dazu ein Fassbier, bitte!"

Hi ElMaestro,

Acc. to the original publication the lad* who coined the term (personal communication 1994).

» Sounds like a German side dish.
» "Einmal Currywurst mit Stolfi und dazu ein Fassbier, bitte!"

Reminds me on the German release of Disney’s Lady and the Tramp (“Susi und Strolch”).

 Earth-mover's distance

"Informally, if the distributions are interpreted as two different ways of piling up a certain amount of dirt over the region D, the EMD is the minimum cost of turning one pile into the other; where the cost is assumed to be amount of dirt moved times the distance by which it is moved."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_mover%27s_distance

Seriously?

Mayby some quantum effects might come into play... I'm out (never in).

Kindest regards, nobody
