Absolutely. And it also works the other way. For example, my men know they have to row or set sails bloody in fast in order to keep my in a mentially fitting design space. If they work too slowly I quickly go out of specs and I am going to tie them to the mast and flog them. I know. They know. They know I know. And so forth. So they generally row pretty fast.

There's always room for improvement of course, so occasionally I will flog one of them for no reason. It's called having a bad day, and it reflects real life and is thus a great way for them to learn: Ashore, it does happen that a batch is out of specs for no apparent reason. Same for a captain.
