The results are similar for the fixed effect (here: formulation). The relationship between the lm's residual and the lme's variance components is described above.

Now, just to add a little confusion:
D_labes pointed out some confusion about the results from the lme, but in my opinion there is also funny stuff going on with the lm: Negative adjusted r squared. Another cosmic mindf#&@er from the realm of statistics. I love it.
